Keeping a canine or feline well-groomed is vital to continued good health and
involves more than just a bath. Grooming your dog includes bathing, brushing
or combing, teeth cleaning, ear cleaning and clipping nails. If your dog or
cat doesn’t look good, there is an increased chance they don’t feel good either.
Without regular grooming, dogs run a higher risk of being infected by internal
and external parasites such as fleas & ticks. They also can carry fungi
such as ringworm.
Dogs with overgrown nails tend to develop physical problems as they will shift
their weight when walking to avoid discomfort, your dog should have nails
trimmed every 4-6 weeks.
Ears should be checked weekly at home. A cotton ball can be used to “swab” out
the ear. Keeping moisture out of the ear can prevent many infections.
Some coat types get matted and tangled easier than others because their hair
shafts have more spurs. Finer coated breeds can get tangles and be hard to
brush out. This can become painful for your pet, so regular combing and
brushing will help avoid matting.
